Meet the 12 finalists for The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2024

The Global Filipino Magazine proudly announces the finalists for its fourth annual Global Filipino Icon Awards 2024, an event that spotlights outstanding Filipinos across the Middle East and beyond. This year’s ceremony will be held on May 17, 2024, at the prestigious Dusit Thani Hotel in Dubai, starting at 7 PM.

The awards have become a significant event for the Filipino community, with the inclusion of seasoned journalist Jessica Soho as this year’s guest of honor, adding a layer of distinction to the festivities. The twelve finalists selected for this year’s accolade include a diverse group of individuals who have shown remarkable influence and leadership in their respective fields:

Ian Eleria

Ian’s journey in the UAE began in 2007, leading to a diverse career across industries. His expertise in audit and accounting initially brought him abroad, but his true passion lies in pop culture. At Comicave, Ian found a synergy between his love for pop culture and professional growth, making it his home for over 16 years.

Despite challenges, Ian’s perseverance and dedication led him to champion Filipino talent and culture globally. His advice to fellow kabayans: stay true to yourself, pursue your passions, and embrace opportunities with determination and gratitude.

Nouel C. Omamalin

Nouel embarked on his culinary journey in 2005, leaving the Philippines to pursue pastry overseas. His career highlights include roles at the iconic Burj Al Arab and as an inflight chef for Etihad Airways. In 2010, he founded Nifty Chef Consultancy and Bakehouse, marking the pinnacle of his career.

Nouel’s work brings him joy as he turns concepts into reality and inspires others. He emphasizes financial literacy and entrepreneurship for fellow kabayans abroad and dreams of establishing a chocolate factory and culinary school in the Philippines.

Mark Anthony Cristobal

Mark’s journey began in the F&B industry in the Philippines, leading him to work abroad in 2012. Starting as a steward-waiter, he climbed the ranks to become a Restaurant Manager, driven by the desire for a better future for his family.

His career highlights include leading the operations of Max’s Restaurant in Dubai, a job he holds close to his heart. Mark’s passion lies in customer interaction and problem-solving, which he finds deeply satisfying.

Working overseas has expanded Mark’s capabilities as a leader and provided opportunities for growth. Despite challenges, he remains motivated by family support and aims to establish and expand his family business back home.

Rechel Hoco

Rechel’s journey as an OFW in Dubai began in December 2022, driven by a desire for a fresh start and to reunite with her brother after four years. Starting as a Restaurant Staff, she eventually found her niche in events, where she currently serves as Event Staff for an Events and Creative Company.

In addition to her job, Rechel is a freelance model, brand ambassador, and vlogger. Her vlogging career started in July 2023, gaining momentum with her engaging content showcasing Dubai’s culture and cuisine. She hosts an online series, “Tara, Kain Tayo!”, exploring various cuisines in the UAE.

Alvin Castillo Mangoma

Alvin’s journey as an IB MYP Music Teacher in Dubai has been one of growth, learning, and profound experiences. Starting in 2018 at GEMS Winchester School Dubai, he has since been dedicated to nurturing musical talent and fostering a love for music among his students.

In addition to his role as a music teacher, Alvin is deeply involved in choral music as a conductor. His journey began at Santa Isabel College Manila Conservatory of Music, where he majored in Music Education and Piano Performance. Over the years, he has conducted various choirs and performed in renowned international choral competitions.

Faye Sta Ana

Faye is a second-generation OFW. Now, she has a little family with her husband and 1-year-old baby, both living in Dubai with her. Raised by a single mother working in Dubai for 22 years, she, along with her 2 siblings, grew up in Manila under their grandmother’s care. Currently, Faye serves as the Head of The Philippines for Taptap Send, a zero transfer fee remittance application serving Asia and Africa from multiple regions worldwide.

Her role involves launching and growing the Philippine corridor, focusing on new user acquisition and fintech education for the Filipino diaspora. Celebrating her 1st year at Taptap Send, she’s thrilled to contribute to its hyper-growth stage, serving hundreds of thousands of Filipinos globally with zero fee remittances.

Gloria Villagen

Gloria started her journey abroad as a personal nanny while also working as a POS staff. Her employer supported her pursuit of education in Human Resources, a decision that significantly shaped her career path.

With determination and resilience, Gloria used her gratuity from her previous job to establish Gloria and Cindy Cleaning Services, where she currently serves as the Managing Director. Her journey from being an employee to a successful entrepreneur is a testament to her strength and motivation to achieve her dreams.

Victorino Jr is a dedicated professional in the field of emergency medical services, currently serving as an Ambulance Nurse/Emergency Medical Technician with the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services under the Government of Dubai. Originally from Balanga Bataan, Victorino is married with two children and is known for his unwavering dedication to his work and his family.

Victorino’s main reason for seeking employment abroad was to provide financial stability for his family, particularly after discovering that his second child had special needs. Despite facing numerous challenges and rejections during his job search, Victorino remained determined to secure a position that would support his family’s needs and provide a better future for his children.
