OFW in Dubai rises through the ranks: From service crew to restaurant manager

For many, the decision to move overseas is driven by dreams of a brighter future, and for 37-year-old Mark Anthony Cristobal, it was no different. Today, as the Restaurant Manager for the Dubai branch of Max’s Restaurant under Landmark Co., his journey is a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and unwavering commitment.

“I must say it was a ladder of achievement and I believe there was never an overnight success,” Cristobal told The Global Filipino Magazine, reminiscing about his initial days as a steward-waiter in Al Barsha Dubai’s Geddys Rest.

This Filipino’s progression from a steward-waiter to a Restaurant Manager is an inspiring story of transformation.

“It takes a village to beat your own self and become someone you want to be,” he added.

Indeed, for Cristobal, Dubai offered more than just job opportunities.

“Dubai is safe, diverse, and convenient,” he shares.

But the path to success was not devoid of struggles. The searing pain of being separated from family, in particular, was a challenge. However, he transformed this pain into his greatest source of motivation, ensuring he remained closely connected with his loved ones, making them his anchor.

Cristobal’s mantra, Dream big, work hardest, echoes his life’s journey.

“It’s not what you cannot do, but what you CAN DO,” he aptly adds.

It’s no surprise that his advice to fellow Filipinos abroad rings with wisdom and sincerity. He urges them to be authentic in life, to exercise financial prudence, and to approach work with integrity and diligence.

Reflecting on his journey, he notes that every step was a learning opportunity.

“Choose people right properly! Success is defined depend on how you define success,” he muses.

Furthermore, his belief in the importance of camaraderie stands out as he emphasizes, “Pakikisama is very important, RM is the reflection of the staff because you build the personality of the people. Don’t be scared to fail, instead learn from it and always stand up.”

Looking ahead, Cristobal envisions scaling greater heights, aiming to make “Cristobal & Sons Dining Place” in the Philippines a renowned name.

“Since F&B is my bread and butter, I want to push everything I have to mold this investment become bigger and the next big thing in the F&B industry,” he declares with confidence.
