Amidst the high-speed ambulances and the urgency of medical emergencies thrives a Filipino whose life story epitomizes the resilience, dedication, and compassion that Filipinos are known for globally. Victorino S. Ladra Jr., at 37, serves as an Ambulance Nurse and Emergency Medical Technician with the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, an arm of the Government of Dubai.
His journey from the shores of Balanga, Bataan, to the fast-paced lanes of Dubai, is a narrative filled with perseverance, strategic planning, and an undying commitment to family and service.
From lifeguard to life saver
Victorino’s odyssey in Dubai began with an unexpected opportunity.
“My very first job here is lifeguard in Atlantis Hotel in Palm Jumeirah,” he recalls, detailing the grueling swim test he endured despite having no formal training in swimming.
His determination was palpable when, struggling to complete the test, he insisted, “Sir, I do not have next time, I will finish this right now.”
This tenacity not only saw him through the swim test but also set him apart during the final interview for the lifeguard position, where his critical thinking and unique approach to a hypothetical rescue scenario won him the job.
His transition from a lifeguard to an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) was propelled by his singular motive for working abroad: to provide for his family, especially for his special needs child.
“Salary,” Victorino states plainly, was his main and only reason for venturing overseas. This decision came at a critical juncture in his life when his family was expanding, and their needs were becoming more complex. Despite numerous setbacks in his initial attempts to work abroad, including missed opportunities and rejections, Victorino’s resolve remained unshaken.
Victorino’s passion for his work as an EMT is deeply personal and rooted in a tragic family experience. The loss of his father to a heart attack, with no immediate medical assistance available, imprinted on him the critical importance of emergency medical services.
“God already revived so many patients using my hands,” he shares, reflecting on the profound satisfaction of saving lives, a feeling that has earned him multiple commendations for his bravery and quick thinking in emergencies.
Beyond the adrenaline of emergency responses, Victorino finds joy in the ability to help people, a sentiment that fueled his career choice and continues to drive his daily efforts.
A beacon for fellow Filipinos
For Victorino, the journey of working overseas is paved with both triumphs and trials. He candidly shares the struggles of staying away from his family and the sacrifices involved in building a better future for them. Yet, his vision extends beyond his personal and professional achievements. Victorino dreams of returning to the Philippines to establish his own ambulance service and a charity for special needs children, a reflection of his deep-rooted desire to give back to his community.
His advice to fellow overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) is straightforward yet profound: “Always have a plan.” Victorino emphasizes the importance of resilience, strategic planning, and family inclusion in overcoming the challenges faced abroad.
