Man dies in Japan after jacket caught in escalator accident

A 72-year-old man from Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, tragically lost his life following an accident involving an escalator at JR Mito Station in eastern Japan. Mamoru Suzuki was found collapsed but conscious by station staff around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, with the back of his jacket caught in the escalator’s handrail, according to local police.

Despite efforts to rescue him, Suzuki later fell unconscious and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The exact cause of his death remains undetermined, prompting authorities to review security camera footage from the station.

The incident occurred near the escalator’s exit, connecting the station platform to the ticket gate area, with the escalator in operation at the time of the accident.
