Justice panel subpoenas NBI over Duterte threat allegations

The House committee on justice has directed the National Bureau of Investigation to appear before it and submit the results of its probe into alleged threats made by Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife Liza, and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

The subpoenas — both for testimony and for documentary evidence — were approved without objection after Bukidnon 2nd District Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores, the committee’s vice chair, formally moved for their issuance. “I would like to move that we issue a subpoena ad testificandum and subpoena duces tecum for the NBI to present results on the investigation of the threats,” Flores said.

Committee chairperson Gerville Luistro of Batangas put the motion to the floor before granting it. “There is a motion to issue a subpoena to the NBI with regards to the allegations of threat committed by the respondent, Vice President,” Luistro said. “Is there any objection? Hearing none, the motion is granted.”

The NBI probe stems from Duterte’s public statement that she had instructed someone to have Marcos, his wife, and Romualdez killed if anything happened to her. That statement became one of the central grounds cited in impeachment complaints filed against the Vice President.

A conviction at the Senate trial, which would follow House approval of the articles of impeachment by at least a one-third vote, would result in Duterte’s removal from office and a permanent ban from public service. Duterte, who has already announced her candidacy for the 2028 presidential race, would be constitutionally disqualified from pursuing that bid if removed.
