UAE road cameras capture major accidents caused by red light violations

Two severe accidents were recorded on Abu Dhabi’s road cameras, both resulting from drivers ignoring red lights, according to the Abu Dhabi Police. A video released by the police shows a sedan speeding through an intersection against a red signal and colliding with a pickup truck, which subsequently lost control and hit a road barrier.

In a separate incident, an SUV making a left turn during a red light was struck by a truck. These incidents highlight ongoing issues with road safety and adherence to traffic signals in the region.

Violating red light rules in the UAE incurs a fine of Dh1,000, 12 black points on the driver’s license, and impoundment of the vehicle for 30 days. The Ministry of Interior’s recent road safety report for 2023 revealed that traffic violations are a major cause of road accidents, with a 3% increase in fatalities due to motorists’ misbehavior. The report noted 352 road deaths across the UAE last year.
