Insurance experts warn UAE drivers: Rain-related claims could face rejection

In the wake of heavy rains inundating the UAE, motorists are facing potential rejections of insurance claims for rain-related damages due to specific circumstances, insurance industry experts caution.

Moin ur Rehman, executive director of Unitrust Insurance Broker, emphasized the importance of understanding insurance conditions. He stated in a Khaleej Times report, “If the car was parked in the parking lot and it got flooded after the heavy rains, and the vehicle owner towed it away to the garage for maintenance, then the maintenance will be covered by the insurance. But if the owner parked it in the waterlogged or partially submerged area and tried to turn on the engine, but the engine was damaged, then the insurance firm could reject the claim.”

Moreover, intentional driving through flooded roads could also jeopardize insurance claims, Rehman warned.

Rehman advised motorists to carefully review their insurance policies, especially regarding coverage for floods and natural calamities. He stressed the importance of comprehensive insurance plans, noting that exclusions in coverage could leave individuals vulnerable to unforeseen expenses.

Avinash Babur, CEO of insurancemarket.ae, echoed Rehman’s sentiments, highlighting the necessity of comprehensive coverage over third-party liability plans. He cautioned against neglecting essential services like roadside assistance and specific covers for natural calamities, which could leave individuals underinsured in critical situations.

As authorities extend warnings amid ongoing heavy rains, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai urged residents to utilize public transportation, emphasizing safety during adverse weather conditions.
