How one Filipino artist’s journey through the pandemic led to global recognition and literary success

Antonio Bernard Ma-at, affectionately known as “Your fellow dreamer,” embodies the quintessence of a global literary figure whose work transcends geographical boundaries and cultural divides. His journey from a passionate musician to a celebrated author and mentor reveals a path paved with creativity, empathy, and a deep-rooted desire to connect with others on a profound level.

In the quiet town of Tanjay in the City of Negros Oriental, Antonio’s creative journey began with music, serving as a powerful medium to express the gamut of human emotions.

“In my high school years, my passion for music led me to composing songs… I found joy in reciting lyrics and delving into the emotional depth they conveyed,” he recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine.

This initial foray into artistic expression laid the groundwork for what would become a multifaceted career in the arts.

The solitude imposed by the pandemic became a catalyst for Antonio’s deeper exploration into poetry, transforming a period of introspection into one of prolific creativity.

“Turning to daily journaling became my refuge, a journey of self-exploration where I poured my heart out through poetry,” Antonio shares, highlighting the therapeutic and expressive power of writing in navigating the challenges of isolation and uncertainty.

Antonio’s entry into the literary world was marked by an openness to collaboration and a keen sense of community. His first co-authored book, “Platonic Eternal Love,” featured alongside the works of 60 authors, set the stage for his deep engagement with the global writing community.

“Writing began to feel more like a calling than just a passion,” Antonio reflects, emphasizing the fulfillment and connection he finds in sharing his work with others.

His contributions to anthologies such as “Mothers of the World” and “Seasons of All Nations” not only celebrate the diversity of human experience but also foster a sense of unity and shared humanity. Through these collaborations, Antonio has helped to bring together voices from around the world, creating platforms for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Antonio’s dedication to nurturing emerging writers is evident in his role as the Philippines Executive Director of World of Writers, where he mentors with unwavering dedication. His efforts have contributed to the formation of vibrant literary communities, including the New Leaf Writing Community and Filipino Poets in Blossoms, collectively impacting over 156,000 members worldwide.

“I am tasked with fostering a vibrant community of writers, providing support, resources, and opportunities for aspiring writers across the country,” he explains, underscoring his commitment to empowering others through literature.

The numerous awards and recognitions Antonio has received, including being named Author of the Year at the Asia Pacific Luminaire Awards 2023 and securing a spot in the Top Ten Contemporary Authors, reflect the significant impact of his work. These accolades, while a testament to his individual talent, also serve as a catalyst for further creativity and collaboration.

Antonio’s engagement with the Academy of Farsala and the Philosophy of Spring project in Greece represents a significant milestone in his career, allowing him to explore the intersections of literature and philosophy.

“This collaboration holds the promise of seamlessly intertwining literature and philosophy in profoundly impactful ways,” Antonio states, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful dialogue.
