A 16-year-old who told police he had been drinking was behind the wheel when his vehicle slammed into another car in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental, killing an elderly man who was heading home to mark his birthday.
The minor lost control after overtaking a motorcycle, according to GMA Regional TV, which reported the incident on Unang Balita on Tuesday. His car then collided with the vehicle carrying the senior citizen, who was traveling with a grandchild at the time.
Police said the teen was carrying only a student permit. Four passengers riding with him were injured in the crash, along with the driver himself.
Investigators said the young man acknowledged to authorities that he had consumed alcohol. He remains confined at a hospital and is set to be placed under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
