Civilian-led trip to Pag-asa Island highlights sovereignty, says AFP

The Armed Forces of the Philippines expressed support for a recent civilian-led voyage to Pag-asa Island, describing it as a significant display of public participation in territorial concerns.

Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, speaking for the military’s West Philippine Sea task group, highlighted the outcome of the trip, including the raising of the Philippine flag on Sandy Cay. He stated, “The successful navigation to our features, culminating in the planting of the Philippine flag on Sandy Cay, is a profound testament to the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people. This is not merely a symbolic gesture; it is a powerful assertion of our sovereign rights and a demonstration of active citizenship in the face of external challenges.”

The mission was carried out by the Atin Ito Coalition, which organized its fourth trip to the area between April 30 and May 5. The group is composed of civilians aiming to deliver supplies and highlight Philippine claims in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Trinidad, such initiatives help bring attention to the concerns of coastal communities and fishing groups. He added that these efforts emphasize the cultural and national importance of the contested waters, beyond their strategic value.

Throughout the voyage, the coalition reported encounters with Chinese maritime vessels. In updates shared online, the group said its boats were continuously shadowed, while drone activities conducted by its team experienced interference allegedly caused by Chinese forces.
