Abu Dhabi Airports reports 35% surge in passenger traffic in first quarter of 2024

Abu Dhabi Airports, the operator of five airports in the emirate, has announced a remarkable surge in passenger traffic during the first three months of 2024. Compared to the same period in 2023, the figures soared by more than 35%, reaching 6.9 million passengers from the previous 5.1 million.

This upswing in passenger traffic was buoyed by robust global demand for passenger and commercial services. Flight movements also saw a positive trajectory, with a recorded increase of 11.4%, totaling 61,737 movements during the first quarter of 2024.

Notably, Zayed International Airport (AUH) played a significant role, welcoming over 6.8 million passengers alone. The newly launched terminal experienced substantial growth, witnessing a 26.6% surge in traffic movements and a 36% increase in passenger traffic.

The first quarter of 2024 also witnessed AUH expanding its airline database, with the return of Turkmenistan Airlines and the launch of Hainan Airlines operating to Haikou, China, bringing the total number of regular scheduled operators to 29 airlines.

London maintained its position as the top destination city, with nearly 290,000 passengers traveling to and from the UK capital. Other top destinations included Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi, and Doha.

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO at Abu Dhabi Airports, emphasized that these figures underscore the continued success of the airports in attracting a growing number of airlines and passengers worldwide. She reiterated the commitment of Abu Dhabi Airports to invest in facilities and services to enhance the passenger experience, satisfy existing airline partners, and attract new ones.

Additionally, cargo traffic experienced significant expansion during the first quarter, with 162,000 tonnes of air freight handled across all airports, marking a 25.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
