Abra stations in Dubai get makeover for enhanced passenger experience

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Thursday the complete revamp of four traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek. The upgraded stations are Bur Dubai Model Station, Deira Old Souq Station, Dubai Old Souq Station, and Sabkha Station.

The renovations aim to improve passenger experience, increase security and safety measures, and maintain the historic and cultural significance of the area. Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said that the Bur Dubai Model Station, for example, now features advanced amenities like shaded outdoor spaces and retail outlets for riders and visitors.

Environmentally-friendly, durable construction materials have been used, which will not only extend the asset lifespan by 10 per cent but also reduce carbon emissions. This move aligns with RTA’s efforts to comply with the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination and increase Bur Dubai Station’s passenger capacity by 33 per cent.

Marine transport, a significant component of Dubai’s transportation network, serves 14 million riders annually. “Marine transport has seen consistent growth and is set to improve further with the completion of urban and touristic amenities on the shores of the Dubai Water Canal,” said Al Tayer.

The authority has also deployed a predictive maintenance system involving the installation of remote monitoring devices and sensors on marine transport. This system will enable real-time monitoring to predict faults and plan for the replacement of required spare parts, thereby streamlining operations and enhancing safety.
