The Abu Dhabi Court for Family, Civil, and Administrative Cases has ruled that a man must pay Dh5,000 to a woman as compensation for distress caused by his persistent phone calls. The court deemed these calls as the cause of both material and moral damages to the woman.
The woman had initially sought Dh50,000 in compensation, along with 12% legal interest from the date of the final judgment, and the reimbursement of fees and expenses. She claimed in her lawsuit that she was greatly annoyed and disturbed by the frequency and number of calls from the defendant.
The court subsequently transformed the lawsuit into a criminal case. As a result, the defendant, who was present during the ruling, was penalized with a fine of Dh3,000.
The plaintiff took further actions against the defendant, lodging a criminal complaint with the Police and Transportation Department, where she pursued the penal cases to their conclusion.
In its final judgment, the court required the defendant to pay a total of Dh5,000 to the woman for damages and also cover the associated fees and expenses.
