Vico Sotto reacts to Curlee Discaya arrest: ‘Sana mas marami pa ang makulong’

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto weighed in on the arrest of government contractor Pacifico “Curlee” Discaya II on Monday, June 8, expressing hope that more people would be held accountable in the widening flood control scandal.

“Sana mas marami pa ang makulong,” Sotto wrote in a Facebook post, reflecting on the day’s developments. The mayor said it was sometimes disheartening to watch what was happening in the country, but that he took comfort in the sense of progress, noting that just a year ago most Filipinos did not even know the scale of corruption taking place.

Sotto pointed to Discaya’s arrest as the latest sign of momentum. Beyond the Discaya couple, he suggested that those who profited most from the flood control scheme were yet to fully answer for it, naming the contractors among those who may have collected the largest sums.

The mayor was careful to frame the issue as bigger than any single case. “Pero hindi lang flood control ang pinag-uusapan dito,” he wrote, describing the scandal as one example of how “evil minds” can exploit a broken system. He warned that the same abuses would recur unless the public continued to fight and “de-normalize” corruption.

Sotto closed his post with a call for sustained public pressure, urging Filipinos to stay informed, exercise critical thinking, and keep holding government to account. “Siguraduhin nating hindi tayo magkakalimutan,” he wrote — making sure the issue is not forgotten. He timestamped the message as posted after Discaya’s arrest.

The post came hours after the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group served an arrest warrant on Discaya at the Senate, ending his nearly nine-month detention there over a contempt citation and transferring him to the Bulacan Provincial Jail. The warrant, issued by the Malolos Regional Trial Court, stems from an Ombudsman malversation case over an alleged P53.9-million anomalous flood control project in Calumpit, Bulacan.
