UST students turn waste and campus life into television with two new shows

A group of third-year communication students from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Arts and Letters is bringing sustainability and student identity to the screen through two original productions set to debut this April.

The programs — On Your mARCH! and Kathalikasan — are produced under Bida One Production, a student-run production house organized for COMMTV 2026, the annual interclass TV production competition among third-year Communication students at UST. Both shows will stream through UST Tiger TV’s online platforms beginning April 6.

Kathalikasan, the group’s second offering, frames environmental responsibility as a competitive sport. Teams of Thomasian students will design outfits and accessories made entirely from discarded materials — paper, plastic, and organic waste — in a three-episode format that builds toward a live runway presentation in its finale. The show draws from United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production.

The competition is structured to escalate in intensity. The opening episode gives teams an advocacy theme to anchor their designs, while a trivia-based advantage game determines which recycled material each group gets to work with. The middle episode tests adaptability through an unannounced “switch” segment that disrupts the teams mid-production. Kathalikasan will air on April 27, May 4, and May 11, from 10:15 AM to 10:45 AM.

Leading the April slate is On Your mARCH!, a non-fiction campus series that follows the arc of student life at UST from enrollment through career readiness. The show structures its episodes as “laps,” each tied to a distinct phase of the Thomasian experience. A mascot named TomTom connects viewers to university offices and student voices throughout the series.

The program aligns itself with SDG 17, which focuses on institutional partnerships, positioning collaboration between students and administrative bodies as central to navigating university life. Its tagline reads: “Guiding your steps from, within, and beyond the arch!” The premiere episode airs April 6 from 1:35 PM to 2:15 PM, with subsequent episodes on April 13 and 20 from 10:15 AM to 10:45 AM — both on lobby screens across the university and on UST Tiger TV’s Facebook page.

Framing both shows is a station ID written by Abigail Belza, Aldhea Cadeliña, and Mickyla Conde. Its central message — “Sa Bida One, ikaw ang bida” — positions the audience, not a conventional star, as the subject of the story.
