The iconic spherical venue taking over Las Vegas is now heading to Abu Dhabi

A towering spherical entertainment venue is headed to Yas Island, with Abu Dhabi and New York-based Sphere Entertainment Co. announcing a partnership to build the first Sphere location outside the United States at an estimated cost of US$1.7 billion.

The facility, to be developed in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, will occupy a site between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi — placing it squarely within one of the region’s densest clusters of leisure and tourism infrastructure. Construction is expected to wrap by the end of 2029.

Sphere Entertainment Executive Chairman and CEO James L. Dolan framed the choice of location as deliberate, pointing to Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure, cultural weight, and global connectivity as factors that made it the right fit for the brand’s international expansion. He described the project as the opening move in building a worldwide network of immersive venues.

The venue’s programming will span three broad formats: the brand’s signature multi-sensory Sphere Experiences, concert residencies featuring both regional Arabic performers and international artists, and large-format brand and marquee events including product launches and combat sports. A flexible capacity ceiling of 20,000 gives the space room to reconfigure for different event types.

DCT Abu Dhabi Chairman Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak pointed to the cultural dimension of the project as central to its purpose. “Together, we are creating a venue that will draw our community, visitors, creators and investors to Yas Island and Abu Dhabi for decades to come,” he said. Plans call for original Sphere Experiences built around Emirati culture, alongside the display of Emirati artwork on the Exosphere — the venue’s spherical LED exterior that became a landmark in its own right when the Las Vegas edition opened in September 2023.

Its proximity to Zayed International Airport and its position along the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit give Sphere Abu Dhabi recurring global broadcast exposure each racing season.

The project enters a pipeline that already includes the Saadiyat Cultural District and a planned Disney theme park resort on Yas Island. Groundwork on infrastructure coordination is underway, with Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Energy, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar all involved in supporting road access, transport links, and site development. The venue is projected to create thousands of permanent jobs once operational.
