For six months, Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco no longer shared a home — and no one around them had any idea. The comedienne and television host disclosed the previously hidden chapter of her marriage during the July 29 debut of the online program Hello Outside World, fielding questions from hosts Bianca Gonzalez and Esnyr Ranollo about how she and Francisco have weathered disagreements over the years.
What began as a discussion about handling conflict turned into an admission Cantiveros said she had never made public. The couple, she explained, reached a point where the marriage genuinely came apart, yet they managed to shield the breakdown from family and the public.
“Kami, umabot talaga sa time na naghiwalay talaga kami, pero walang nakakaalam,” she said.
She was direct about the length of the estrangement and how closely it had been guarded. “Six months talaga, hindi kami nagsama sa isang bahay. Dito ko lang talaga ito sinabi.”
Even while separated, Cantiveros said, the two avoided turning against each other publicly, choosing instead to keep raising their children as partners. That mutual respect, she noted, held the situation together during the months they spent apart.
The turning point came in an unlikely setting — a movie theater, where the couple had taken their child. It was there that Francisco raised the idea of trying again, telling her their family needed them to make the marriage work.
“Sabi niya, i-try natin na i-work out kasi kailangan tayo ng anak natin,” Cantiveros recalled.
Reuniting, she said, rekindled something stronger than what they’d had before. “Nakita namin ang rapport, na in love ulit kami sa isa’t isa. Hanggang mas naging more kaming na in love sa isa’t isa dahil doon sa pinagdaanan namin.”
Cantiveros and Francisco, popularly known to fans as “Melason,” became a couple after meeting as housemates on Pinoy Big Brother: Double Up in 2009. They married in December 2013 at Holy Cross Parish in General Santos City and are parents to two daughters, Mela and Stela.
Cantiveros framed the entire experience as a message to couples who treat every argument as grounds to walk away — that a fight, or even falling out of love, does not have to spell the end. Watching Francisco remain a devoted father, she added, only deepened the regard she holds for him.
