Sick OFW battling cervical cancer gets gov’t aid delivered to her hospital bed

A former overseas Filipino worker receiving treatment for Stage 2 cervical cancer in Zamboanga City got a direct visit from government officials last Monday, as the Department of Migrant Workers Regional Office IX brought financial assistance to her hospital bedside under the Aksyon Fund program.

The March 31 visitation was part of DMW IX’s effort to deliver aid directly to distressed OFWs rather than requiring them to navigate bureaucratic processes while ill. The Aksyon Fund is the department’s mechanism for providing emergency assistance to migrant workers facing medical, legal, or other crises.

DMW IX said the program is designed to reach OFWs at their most vulnerable, including those too sick to personally file claims or follow up on their cases.

The department framed the hospital visit as consistent with its broader mandate to bring government services to the people, describing the Aksyon Fund not only as financial relief but as an expression of solidarity with workers who have contributed to the country through overseas employment.

DMW IX said it remains committed to extending support to OFWs across the region facing serious hardship.
