The House of Representatives is preparing to challenge the Supreme Court’s recent decision declaring as unconstitutional the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, Speaker Martin Romualdez said on Saturday, July 26.
In a media interview, Romualdez said they intend to file a motion for reconsideration within the 15-day window following receipt of the ruling, noting the need to explore all legal options available to the chamber.
“We are in the process of reading the decision of the Supreme Court but, of course, we shall respect the decision,” he said, as quoted by One News PH. “We shall also exhaust our remedies. We’ll also be preparing a motion for reconsideration.”
Earlier, the Supreme Court unanimously struck down the Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President, ruling that they violated the constitutional one-year bar on multiple impeachment complaints against the same official.
Romualdez, however, pointed out that the House adhered to precedents set by previous rulings. “I think they’re modifying the Gutierrez and the Francisco rulings, which actually we’re adhering to in the process. But nonetheless, we reserve that for the MR,” he said.
The Speaker also expressed hope that the High Court might revisit or refine its decision.
