Qatar Airways brings free Starlink Wi-Fi to 150 planes, with more on the way

Passengers on more than 86,000 Qatar Airways flights have logged onto the carrier’s Starlink internet since the service went live in October 2024, with the connected passenger count now exceeding 23 million. The Doha carrier is running as many as 323 flights daily equipped with the satellite Wi-Fi.

The airline confirmed that 150 of its widebody jets now carry Starlink, a total that includes the first Boeing 787-9 anywhere to fly with the system installed. That milestone hands Qatar Airways the distinction of being the earliest operator worldwide to put Starlink on the 787-9 variant.

Installation work on the 787 line has passed the 83 percent mark, and the carrier is holding to its target of finishing the full fleet before 2026 closes. Fitting across the smaller Boeing 787-8 aircraft wrapped up within a seven-month span. Qatar Airways moved through comparable programs on other types at a similar clip, taking nine months to outfit its Boeing 777s and eight months for the Airbus A350s.

The carrier describes its fleets of 777s, A350s and 787s as the first and largest Starlink-fitted groups of those models flying today. It also points to being the first operator to bring the service to long-haul and ultra-long-haul flying spanning six continents.

Onboard, the connection delivers download rates as high as 500 Mbps, enough for travelers to hold meetings, message contacts, watch shows or browse midflight. Access carries no charge, reached through Privilege Club membership authentication or sign-up during the trip, though the airline notes that gate-to-gate coverage can be restricted at some airports where local rules apply.

Qatar Airways frames the expansion as part of a broader push to treat fast internet as a fixed feature of its long-haul cabins rather than an add-on.
