Supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte capped off a day of protest actions on Sunday with a gathering at Plaza Independencia, where they openly called for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s resignation.
The demonstration was highlighted by a Holy Mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Ciano Ubod, parish priest of Compostela, Cebu, with organizers insisting that about 3,000 people joined the event. Police, however, countered this estimate, placing the turnout between 700 and 1,000. The program began at 3 p.m. and concluded with the Mass shortly after 6:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, around a hundred Duterte supporters staged a protest at Fuente Osmeña Park but yielded the space when thousands of anti-corruption marchers, backed by the Catholic Church and various civil society groups, converged on the area.
Meanwhile, about 200 members of Bagong Alyansa Makabayan launched their own rally along Colon Street, pressing for the prosecution of those involved in the multi-billion peso flood control scandal that has fueled public outrage nationwide.
