The flag carrier is poised to plug into one of aviation’s largest global networks, with Philippine Airlines accepting an offer to become the 16th airline in the oneworld Alliance.
For passengers, membership translates into tangible perks. PAL noted that travelers will gain entry to premium lounges worldwide and a more seamless travel experience overall. Members of the carrier’s Mabuhay Miles program will also be able to accumulate and spend miles across the alliance’s roster of airlines.
The invitation was extended at the International Air Transport Association’s Annual General Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to PAL.
Lucio Tan III, who heads PAL Holdings, framed the move as a turning point for the airline. He pledged that the partnership would bring Filipinos and international travelers expanded options, more reliable trips, and elevated service standards.
“Becoming a member of the oneworld Alliance and strengthening Southeast Asia’s representation within the group significantly brings the Philippines and the region closer to the world like never before,” Tan said.
The alliance’s leadership pointed to the strategic logic behind welcoming the Manila-based carrier. “PAL’s entry into oneworld supports our long-term strategic growth and strengthens our connectivity across key markets in the Asia Pacific region,” said Robert Isom, who chairs the oneworld Governing Board and serves as chief executive of American Airlines.
PAL’s addition expands a lineup that already counts some of the industry’s most recognizable names, among them American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines, Iberia, Finnair, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, SriLankan Airlines, Fiji Airways, and the combined Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.
