A partial ceiling collapse at the arrival extension area of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 injured seven people on Friday, prompting the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to order an immediate investigation.
According to an official statement released by the DOTr, the agency has directed the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to coordinate with NAIA’s private operator, New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC), to determine the cause of the incident. Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez ordered both agencies to prioritize the safety and security of passengers and airport personnel, and to submit a detailed incident report.
Initial reports from NNIC confirmed that seven individuals sustained injuries and were given prompt medical attention. The DOTr said airport operations at Terminal 1 remain normal as of the time of the statement.
The DOTr added that it is closely monitoring the situation and expects a thorough assessment, including the implementation of preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
