The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed that an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Kuwait was among those who died in the MV June Aster ferry fire that occurred on September 9 while the vessel was traveling to Coron, Palawan.
According to the DMW, the worker had returned to the Philippines from Kuwait to spend time with their child before they were expected to go back to their employer in two weeks.
The department said its Mimaropa Office has been in contact with the victim’s family following the tragedy. The agency also said it would help the relatives determine what assistance and benefits may be available to them.
“We will coordinate with and assist the family of the deceased OFW in order to determine the assistance and benefits they may receive,” said the DMW.
The agency also conveyed its sympathy to the families and relatives of those who died in the incident.
“The DMW extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives of those who perished in the fire that struck the MV June Aster,” it said.
The fire broke out aboard the passenger vessel on September 9 during its voyage from Batangas to Coron. Authorities have reported 77 deaths, while 43 people survived and 12 others remain missing.
