Iloilo City declares state of calamity due to water scarcity amid rising heat

The Iloilo City Council announced on Monday a state of calamity in response to water scarcity aggravated by scorching temperatures affecting various parts of the country.

In an official statement, the local government disclosed that this declaration permits the utilization of a portion of Iloilo City’s calamity fund, totaling P12.5 million, for the acquisition and distribution of water to all affected barangays.

The coverage extends to barangays beyond the assessment of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), as confirmed by the LGU.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) had previously warned of soaring heat indices in Iloilo City and other regions today.

According to PAGASA, the heat index could reach up to 42°C in both Iloilo City and Dumangas, Iloilo.

Heat index, distinct from the actual air temperature, gauges the perceived temperature by factoring in humidity and air temperature.

Elevated heat indexes pose risks such as heat cramps, exhaustion, and potentially deadly heat strokes to individuals exposed to prolonged heat.

PAGASA advised limiting outdoor activities, maintaining adequate hydration, and wearing lightweight clothing to mitigate the adverse effects of the heat.
