Hot lugaw was on the menu for displaced Dabawenyos on Friday night as teams from two Duterte offices set up serving lines inside packed evacuation shelters across the city.
The relief run was mounted by the offices of Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte and Vice Mayor Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II, whose personnel fanned out to sites hosting families forced out by rising floodwaters. Among the stops were the Our Lady of Lourdes Central Park Gym and the Bangkal Satellite Gym in Royal Valley, where evacuees had gathered as the waters climbed.
Bangkal has been among the hardest-hit pockets of the city during this stretch of bad weather. The barangay’s Our Lady of Lourdes parish has repeatedly doubled as a refuge for residents fleeing swollen rivers, a role it took on again as this round of flooding pushed people out of low-lying neighborhoods.
Serving warm meals directly at the shelters gave the two offices a way to reach affected families the moment they arrived, rather than waiting for conditions to ease.
The Duterte camp has leaned on this kind of ground-level response before, deploying volunteers and food to communities as soon as evacuation sites fill up. Friday’s operation followed that pattern, with the lugaw handed out on-site to those who had spent the night away from their homes.
