Users on Facebook can now prove a human is behind their account without paying for it, following Meta’s July 24, 2026 introduction of Facebook Verified. The badge is aimed directly at the growing problem of AI-fabricated personas, and Meta has kept it outside the fee structure that governs its existing verification products.
Qualifying for the badge starts with a short video selfie. Meta’s facial-recognition system measures that clip against the profile photos already on the account, and a confirmed match clears the user in what the company describes as a matter of minutes. Verification is a one-time step; once it clears, the marker carries over to the parts of Facebook where Meta believes strangers most need reassurance.
Those areas include Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and a user’s Profile at launch, with Feed posts slated to receive the badge in a later phase. The rollout is not universal from day one — Meta is opening it in a handful of markets before widening access internationally.
Not every account can obtain it. Eligibility is capped at users 18 and older whose accounts stay within Meta’s Community Standards, particularly the rules covering fraud, scams, and deceptive conduct, and any account flagged for inauthentic activity is shut out. Pages and ProMode accounts fall outside the program entirely, a boundary that keeps the feature tied to individual people rather than creators or commercial operators.
Meta has also drawn a firm line around what the badge is meant to signal. It attests only that a genuine person finished the selfie check and that the account satisfied the company’s trust and safety thresholds — it carries no endorsement and offers no assurance that a given interaction will be safe or that the person can be trusted.
The launch marks a departure from how a Facebook check mark previously worked. Until now, that recognition came bundled inside Meta Verified, a paid subscription whose plans run from $14.99 to $499.99 monthly per profile and bundle extras such as impersonation protection and account support. Facebook Verified sits apart from those blue badges and asks nothing in return beyond the selfie.
