Expo City Dubai lights up with over 100 free events at COP28 Green Zone

COP28, the 28th meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, is set to transform Expo City Dubai into a hub of learning, collaboration, and sustainability. Scheduled from November 30 to December 12, the conference will open its Green Zone to the public from December 3, offering over 100 free shows and workshops.

The Green Zone, distinct from the formal negotiation spaces of the Blue Zone, is a vibrant area where a diverse array of groups – from youth and civil society to NGOs and indigenous communities – will converge to share ideas and insights. This open space is dedicated to discovery and climate action, inviting visitors to engage in themed areas focused on Energy Transition, Technology, Innovation, and Youth.

A key attraction is the Expo City Farm at Al Forsan Park, showcasing regenerative agriculture, hydroponic food production, and sustainable farming. Visitors can engage in hands-on workshops, farm-to-table dining experiences, and learn about innovative technologies like water production from air moisture and BioChar.

A highlight for younger audiences is the original musical “Alya in Terraland,” which will be staged at Terra Auditorium. This 45-minute production combines hip-hop and R&B to promote environmental awareness through the story of Alya, a character who learns about the impact of human activities on the environment.

The Terra Pavilion invites visitors to take a Pledge for People and Planet, marking the first time this pledge will be available in Arabic. The Women’s Pavilion will host the Resonating Tides exhibition, focusing on the role of women and girls in fostering a sustainable future. Additionally, the Sustainability Pavilion will feature Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s marine photography exhibition, “Fragile Beauty,” celebrating ocean life and its preservation.

Free workshops include beekeeping with the Trillion Bee Coalition, vermi composting, upcycling, creating pollinator homes, and storytelling sessions for children. The event also promotes green mobility, encouraging visitors to use Dubai Metro and providing shuttle services to the Green Zone.
