Dubai completes first phase of AED250 million Al Quoz drainage network

A AED250 million sewerage and stormwater drainage network in Al Quoz Creative Zone has been completed, Dubai Municipality announced Sunday, marking the first phase of a broader infrastructure programme designed to shield the emirate from future flooding.

The completed works cover Al Quoz Industrial Areas 1, 2, 3, and 4, along with the corridor between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. Construction included 14 kilometres of stormwater drainage systems and 15 kilometres of sewerage lines.

Adel Al Marzouqi, chief executive of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the project directly addresses the emirate’s exposure to extreme weather events.

“This project contributes to enhancing the efficiency of the rainwater drainage system and the smooth flow of water in the Al Quoz Creative Zone, while reducing water accumulation,” he said. “This ensures the continuity of services and business operations and supports the city’s resilience and preparedness to face various future climatic conditions.”

The Al Quoz phase is part of Tasreef, a AED30 billion drainage masterplan ordered by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, following the April 2024 storms that caused widespread flooding across the UAE. A second weather event at the end of March this year again disrupted travel and inundated roads across the Emirates, though conditions were less severe than in 2024.

Tasreef, scheduled for completion in 2033, builds on drainage projects Dubai launched in 2019 covering the Expo Dubai area, Al Maktoum International Airport City, and Jebel Ali. The expanded programme extends to Nad Al Hamar, Dubai International Airport, Garhoud, Rashidiya, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Bada’a, with a target of increasing rainwater drainage capacity by 700 per cent — enough, authorities say, to meet the emirate’s needs for a century.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, director general of Dubai Municipality, described the Al Quoz project as central to the city’s infrastructure goals.

“The Sewerage and Stormwater Network Development Project in Al Quoz is one of Dubai Municipality’s key strategic projects to enhance the efficiency, resilience, and operational readiness of the emirate’s infrastructure systems,” he said.

The Al Quoz completion follows a AED277 million sewerage and rainwater drainage network finished in Nad Al Sheba in June 2025, which spans 24 kilometres and connects 11 kilometres of household lines to Dubai’s main sewerage system. That project also includes an advanced pumping station rated at 4,000 litres per second and a 31-kilometre gravity-based drainage pipeline to maintain system readiness during heavy rainfall.

The total Tasreef investment across both phases reaches AED500 million, with the remaining AED250 million allocated to subsequent works under the programme.
