Throwing rubbish out of a moving vehicle now stands as one of the traffic offences carrying both a financial penalty and demerit points in Abu Dhabi, with authorities pressing the public to treat the emirate’s roads with greater care.
Under Article 71 of the Traffic Law, any driver caught discarding waste from a vehicle is liable for a fine of AED 1,000 along with six black points added to their record.
The reminder came from Abu Dhabi Police, working alongside the Abu Dhabi Monitoring and Control Centre, who framed responsible conduct behind the wheel as part of preserving the emirate’s standing and outward image.
Beyond the legal consequences, the police pointed to the wider stakes involved, noting that discarded waste affects the environment, threatens public health and detracts from the clean appearance authorities want visitors and residents to associate with Abu Dhabi.
Motorists were also reminded that the obligation extends to those riding with them. Drivers were asked to make sure passengers place any rubbish in designated disposal areas rather than throwing it onto the road, a habit authorities described as central to keeping public spaces clean and limiting pollution.
