A farewell to Dubai: OFW reflects on unforgettable moments and lessons learned

As the sun sets on one chapter of his life in the vibrant, ever-evolving landscape of Dubai, we sit down with OFW Jess Manglicmot who has carved out a successful nine-year tenure in the heart of the UAE. With a heart full of gratitude and a mind enriched with experiences, he shares with us the journey that encapsulates not just personal growth but the rapid transformation witnessed in Dubai over nearly a decade.

“I moved in August so it was too hot. I was one of those people you can see outside using umbrellas,” he reminisces with a smile about his early days in Dubai, a period of intense acclimation marked by a whirlwind of challenges ranging from setting up a new home to navigating through a series of stringent administrative processes.

However, Dubai’s technologically advanced infrastructure significantly eased this transition.

“Everything was done online. I remember within 2 weeks, I already got my Emirates ID, set up my bank account, and signed my lease for my apartment.”

Living in the bustling downtown area initially, he vividly remembers the mixed feelings of being overwhelmed yet finding comfort in the urban lifestyle, a sentiment fortified by the company of friends who helped him integrate into the diverse culture of Dubai.

Witness to Dubai’s growth

Reflecting on how Dubai morphed over the years, he recalls his journey from a relatively quiet Motor City to witnessing the birth of lively new areas and an exponential increase in commercial establishments.

“When I moved there, there were very few shops. But now, it’s like a small city with everything in it,” he notes, painting a picture of a region that never ceased to grow, offering a melange of Filipino cuisines and vibrant night markets that became a regular hangout spot for him and his friends.

At the core of his journey was his role as the Director of Children’s Ministry at a Christian church located in Internet City. Taking us through the strides of expanding the church’s reach and nurturing a growing community, he shares, “When I started in 2014, we had around 100 kids attending our kids program. Recently, as per our latest head count, we had almost 500 kids attending our kids church.”

This role not only provided professional satisfaction but brought forth an extended family, born out of close-knit bonds formed with his team and volunteers.

Fitness and friendship: A healthful harmony

“Living as a single person in Dubai is challenging,” he shares, touching upon the transformative journey of finding solace in fitness communities after a health scare in 2017.

“Through training with my different fitness groups, I lost a lot of weight, got rid of my fatty liver, and was able to compete in several races,” he states.

In 2021, the altruistic side of him found a new avenue to give back to Dubai during a volunteering stint at the Expo. It became a remarkable journey adorned with two awards – the Golden Heart Award and the HERO Award.

“It is an experience of a lifetime! I only wanted to do it to give back to this beautiful country, little did I know I would win two major awards for my simple acts.”

A farewell tinged with gratitude

As he prepares to say goodbye to the city that has been his home for nearly a decade, the heartfelt sentiment resonates in his voice, “I will miss the security in UAE in general. The times I can leave my phone or belongings in public places without fear of someone stealing.”

Dubai, for him, stands as a beacon of security, efficiency, and a rich cultural tapestry that harmoniously blends tradition and modernity, a perspective molded by countless experiences and the enriching influence of the Emirati culture.

With eyes set on Oman for a new role as the Children, Youth, and Family Pastor, he radiates a spirit of optimism and a penchant for adventure.

“I love nature and I heard Oman has a lot to offer in terms of adventures,” he shares, anticipating a future woven with fresh connections, road trips, and the birth of new fitness communities.

Parting words

“To every Filipino considering a move to Dubai, come with an open mind and with some money in your pocket. Life in Dubai is not easy but if you manage your resources well, you will thrive,” he advises.

To the friends, colleagues, and connections forged in Dubai, he leaves a heartfelt message of preparedness and a call to value savings, offering a practical perspective honed through years of experience.
