An ordinary grocery run turned memorable for customers at Mushrif Mall in Abu Dhabi on August 11, when Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan appeared among them without warning.
The UAE President moved through the Lulu Hypermarket in a dark blue kandura, guided by Yusuff Ali M.A., Chairman and Managing Director of Lulu Group. Along the way, he paused at the shelves to inspect some of the goods on display.
Those who had gathered were met with easy familiarity. He offered handshakes to residents lined up near him and returned the greetings of shoppers who had hoped to see him in person.
The exchanges ran both ways. Footage circulating online captured a man in a white kandura, positioned at the edge of the frame, delivering a crisp salute. The President answered with a smile and pressed his palm to his chest in acknowledgment of the gesture. Separate clips from the day showed him waving toward onlookers standing off to the side.
The mall stop follows a recent appearance abroad. In London days earlier, Sheikh Mohamed was seen with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The two greeted each other with an embrace after meeting outside the country, and one video showed Sheikh Mohammed holding the wrist of the Abu Dhabi Ruler as the pair walked into a hotel lobby together.
Across that trip, the President was repeatedly filmed greeting well-wishers and waving to crowds who had assembled near hotel entrances and along the streets to see him.
