Filipino migrant workers in Kuwait now have a new outlet to turn their overseas experiences into music through “Himig ng Bayani,” an original songwriting competition organized by Philippine government agencies in the Gulf state.
The contest is open to Overseas Filipino Workers in Kuwait and their dependents who hold active OWWA membership from the time of entry submission through the Grand Finals. Entries are accepted starting August 2, 2026, with a submission deadline of October 15, 2026.
Built around the theme “Buhay OFW,” the competition invites songs that reflect the hope, courage, sacrifice, and love that define life abroad. Compositions must be original works written in Tagalog and/or English, fall under the pop or ballad genre, and run three to five minutes in length. Each entry may credit one or two composers and one or two official interpreters, and a composer may also serve as the interpreter.
Organizers have set strict rules on originality. Submitted songs must be newly created and previously unreleased, unperformed in any competition, and never uploaded to any social media or digital platform. The use of artificial intelligence to generate lyrics or melody is expressly prohibited, and any composition proven to be AI-generated will be automatically disqualified.
Finalists will perform their songs live, with accompaniment limited to solo acoustic guitar or solo piano. Full-band arrangements are allowed only through a minus-one or backing track, while live band accompaniment, lip-syncing, and pre-recorded lead vocals are barred.
To enter, participants must submit an MP3 song demo featuring a live-recorded vocal performance of the composition, along with a complete copy of the lyrics in PDF, JPEG, or PNG format. Full mechanics and the application form are accessible through the QR code on the official contest poster.
