UAE youth basketball team heads to Bangkok for international tournament this July

There are moments in sport that remind us that success is measured by far more than the final whistle. The Desert Warriors’ journey to the International Youth Basketball Championships (IYBC) Thailand 2026 is one of those stories.

As Head Coach Andy Digolto explains, “The Desert Warriors are more than just a basketball team—they represent the growing ambition, talent, and potential of youth basketball in the UAE. Built on a foundation of hard work, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship, our players are committed to developing both as athletes and as individuals.”

That philosophy extends beyond the court. Every training session, every sacrifice, and every challenge prepares these young athletes not only for international competition but also for life. The lessons they learn—leadership, resilience, accountability, and respect—will remain long after the final buzzer sounds.

Qualifying for IYBC Thailand is itself a remarkable achievement. The tournament has become one of Asia’s premier youth basketball events, bringing together elite young talent from across the region. For the Desert Warriors, it represents an opportunity to compete against different styles of play while proudly flying the UAE flag.

Coach Digolto believes the true value of the experience cannot be measured solely by results. “While we are committed to competing at the highest level, our goals extend far beyond the final scoreboard. We want every player to return home as a better athlete, a stronger teammate, and a more confident young person. Success will be measured by the lessons learned, the relationships built, and the pride with which we represent our team, our community, and the UAE.”

The Desert Warriors’ journey also reflects the exciting evolution of youth basketball in the Emirates. “Youth basketball in the UAE has grown tremendously,” says Digolto. “We’re seeing more young athletes taking up the sport, stronger coaching, better grassroots programmes, and increased opportunities for competitive play. It’s an exciting time, and we believe the future of basketball in the UAE is very bright.”

None of this would be possible without the people behind the players. Families commit countless hours supporting training schedules and travel, coaches dedicate themselves to nurturing talent, while sponsors, volunteers, and the wider community create opportunities that help dreams become reality. The Desert Warriors are proof that sporting success is always a collective effort.

As readers, we often celebrate the medals, trophies, and championship moments. Yet stories like this remind us that the greatest victories are often quieter: a young athlete discovering confidence, a team learning to trust one another, or a player proudly wearing the UAE colours for the very first time.

The journey to Thailand is about much more than basketball. It is about building character, creating memories, and inspiring the next generation to dream bigger.

As Coach Digolto’s message to aspiring athletes reminds us: “Dream big, stay committed, and trust the process. Every achievement starts with daily habits—showing up, working hard, and constantly looking for ways to improve. Success isn’t defined only by trophies or medals. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself, both on and off the court.”

As these young athletes prepare to compete at the International Youth Basketball Championships (IYBC) Thailand 2026, taking place at RIS Ruamrudee International School, Bangkok, Thailand, from 24–28 July 2026, they carry with them not only the hopes of their team but also the pride of their families, coaches, and the UAE basketball community.

We congratulate every member of the Desert Warriors on earning the opportunity to compete on the international stage and wish them every success as they proudly represent the UAE. Good luck, Desert Warriors!
