Filipino nurse makes history with top nursing leadership role in Saudi Arabia

Working abroad as a nurse often means adapting to a new culture, embracing higher expectations, and proving oneself in an increasingly competitive healthcare environment. For Filipino nurses, it also means carrying the reputation of the Philippines wherever they go. Erwin Garcia Bolante, MAN, RN, CHRMO, CHQO, CPPS, has done exactly that—reaching another significant milestone in his career after being officially promoted to Nursing Excellence Director at one of Saudi Arabia’s prestigious military hospitals.

The promotion marks a historic achievement, making Bolante the first Filipino to hold the highest leadership position dedicated to Nursing Excellence in the history of his institution. It is the culmination of years of hard work, continuous learning, and an unwavering commitment to improving healthcare quality and patient safety.

Born in Roxas City, Capiz, Bolante began his nursing journey after earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Anthony College of Roxas City, Inc., where he received the Clinical Efficiency Award. He passed the Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination in 2007 before building his early career as a staff nurse and later becoming the youngest Charge Nurse in the hospital’s history at just 24 years old.

In 2014, after passing the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties Nursing Licensure Examination, he moved to Saudi Arabia and joined King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah as an Emergency Room Staff Nurse. His dedication quickly earned him greater responsibilities, serving as Acting Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Supervisor specializing in nursing quality, Nurse Manager, and Nursing Excellence Manager before receiving his latest promotion.

Alongside his professional growth, Bolante continued investing in his education. He completed his Master of Arts in Nursing, major in Nursing Service Administration, at St. Paul University Philippines in 2021 and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science. Earlier this year, he also passed the United States National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), making him a licensed registered nurse in the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. He further strengthened his credentials by earning the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) certification.

His journey to becoming Nursing Excellence Director was far from easy.

When the hospital restructured one of its highest nursing leadership positions and opened it through a competitive selection process, Bolante stood out as the only Filipino and the only expatriate among the candidates. Rather than viewing it as an obstacle, he saw it as an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of Filipino nurses on the global stage.

Before facing the interview panel, he turned to his faith.

“If this is meant for me, God will make it happen.”

He recalled feeling physically and emotionally exhausted after the interview but remained confident that he had done everything he could. For him, the opportunity represented more than career advancement.

“This journey was never solely about personal success. It was for my family. It was for everyone who believed in me. Most importantly, it was for every Filipino who dreams of proving that excellence has no borders,” he shared.

On July 5, 2026, months after completing the selection process, Bolante received the news that would redefine his career—his promotion had been officially approved.

As Nursing Excellence Director, he now leads strategic initiatives that advance nursing excellence, healthcare quality, patient safety, professional development, nursing education, and evidence-based practice. His responsibilities extend beyond a single institution as he collaborates with 23 Armed Forces hospitals across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, helping strengthen nursing standards and improve clinical outcomes throughout the healthcare system.

Despite reaching one of the highest leadership positions in his field, Bolante remains focused on mentoring fellow nurses and creating opportunities for others to grow.

“This promotion is not the end of my journey but the beginning of an even greater responsibility. I remain committed to advocating for our nurses, promoting patient safety, advancing healthcare quality, and inspiring others through servant leadership, integrity, and excellence,” he said.

His career has also been marked by numerous quality improvement initiatives, leadership roles, and active membership in local and international nursing organizations. He has served as a consultant on the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), Magnet Recognition preparation, Joint Commission International (JCI) standards, and healthcare quality improvement programs. Throughout his career, he has consistently advocated for empowering nurses through education, leadership, and continuous professional development.

Bolante’s latest promotion represents more than personal achievement. It highlights the growing contributions of Filipino healthcare professionals on the international stage and demonstrates that competence, integrity, and leadership can open doors regardless of nationality.

Adding to his growing list of recognitions, Bolante received the Outstanding Filipino Nurse Leader in Saudi Arabia award during The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, honoring his outstanding contributions to nursing leadership, healthcare quality, and patient safety.
