Sheikh Hamdan pushes wider planting of flame trees across Dubai

A citywide greening push in Dubai is set to introduce more Flame Trees across neighborhoods, following instructions from Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The initiative covers roadsides, parks, leisure areas, and private properties, with authorities also preparing to provide seedlings to residents interested in planting them at home or on farms.

The move was discussed during a session involving Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation, where the seasonal transformation brought by the trees was highlighted. Sheikh Hamdan said, “In summer, when the Flame Tree blooms in Dubai, it brings life to every home, every majlis, every street, and every park. With it, our city blooms, full of life and beauty.”

Known for its striking orange blossoms that typically appear from May through July, the Flame Tree also offers practical benefits. Its fast early growth allows it to form a broad canopy with minimal maintenance, creating shade that can lower surrounding ground temperatures by about five degrees.

Beyond aesthetics, the species is considered suitable for the emirate’s environment, thriving in both sandy and clay soils. It can grow up to 12 metres tall, spread its canopy to around 15 metres, and remain viable for decades, with a lifespan that can reach up to 60 years.
