Using emergency alert sounds as ringtones could land you in legal trouble, Qatar warns

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior has put the public on notice that misusing tones associated with the National Emergency Alert System carries legal consequences — including using them as mobile ringtones.

The warning, issued through the ministry’s official X account, covers both the playing and sharing of audio or video clips that replicate emergency alert sounds. Authorities say such actions risk triggering unnecessary panic and disrupting public order.

The ministry framed the issue as one of civic responsibility, reminding residents that these are regulated signals with a specific public safety function. Those found in violation will be held accountable under the law.

Reports of misuse can be directed to authorities by dialling 999.

The statement also addressed the broader problem of misinformation, with the ministry urging the public to avoid spreading unverified content across any platform. Official sources, it stressed, remain the reliable standard for accurate information — a position the ministry tied directly to safeguarding community security.
