Filipino cyclist completes 24-hour charity ride in Dubai to support children with cancer

The Filipino cyclist who completed a record-setting 24-hour charity ride in Dubai has opened up about what pushed him through the challenge and why he dedicated the feat to children battling cancer. Danny T. Cordero RN, 53, rode 723 kilometers with an average speed of 36.8 kph, now recognized as the longest road-bike distance ridden by a Filipino within a 24-hour elapsed time.

The charity ride was held at NAS Meydan through the “Ride for a Cause” initiative of LifeSpark Cycling. Donations have now reached AED 19,000 for the Al Jalila Foundation, which supports cancer treatment and research benefiting young patients.

Cordero, a Fitness Professional with LifeSpark who has been based in the UAE for 17 years, said the idea for the challenge came from a very personal place. “My motivation stems from a desire to give back to Dubai, my second home, and to inspire others, especially older individuals, to embrace a healthy lifestyle. This challenge represents a culmination of my experiences and dedication to a cause greater than myself,” he said.

He explained that professional discipline in coaching helped him structure his training and maintain balance. “As a coach, I manage my time by prioritizing my Health, Nutrition & Training and integrating cycling into my daily routine, ensuring I maintain a balance between work and my passion for long-distance cycling,” he shared, adding that his work reinforces the value of consistency. “My professional life continuously reinforces the importance of discipline, which translates well into my athletic pursuits. As well being a role model for my clients, family and community.”

Looking back at the most difficult hours of the ride, Cordero said his purpose kept him going. “During the toughest moments, I focused on my purpose—raising funds for children with cancer—and drew strength from the support of DUBAI CYCLING community. (Special Mention to Carolina & Thomas) ; and the families I aim to help,” he said, noting that each kilometer felt meaningful. “I reminded myself that every pedal stroke was a step closer to making a difference for these children.”

He explained that dedicating the ride to the Al Jalila Foundation aligned with what he wanted to accomplish beyond cycling. “I wanted to make a meaningful impact in the lives of other people , turns my GRIT into HOPE! and the Al Jalila Foundation aligns with my mission to support those in need,” he said. “Knowing that my efforts could provide essential assistance through fundraising campaigns, motivated me to push my limits.”

Cordero hopes the effort encourages more people to take part in charitable work, whether through sport or other means. “I hope my achievement inspires others to contribute to charitable causes and shows that anyone can make a difference through dedication and commitment, regardless of their background,” he said, adding that collective support can create wider impact. “Together, we can create a ripple effect that encourages community support and awareness to help others in need.”
