Abu Dhabi is preparing to roll out a major transport upgrade with the launch of the new Line 4 Tram, a project that will directly connect Yas Island to Zayed International Airport in just 20 minutes, Khaleej Times reported.
Unveiled at the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference, the tram line is designed to provide smooth, fast, and eco-friendly journeys across the capital. Services will run every five minutes, with capacity to carry up to 600 passengers during major events — offering a reliable alternative to private cars and easing congestion on busy roads.
Officials from the Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT) described the route as an essential link that will connect residential communities, tourist attractions, and future high-speed rail hubs. They highlighted examples such as residents parking their cars and taking the tram to Etihad Arena, or tourists boarding the tram directly to attractions like the upcoming Disneyland Abu Dhabi without the stress of traffic.
“Mobility is no longer about reaching a station or a stop. It is about the entire journey — from homes and schools to workplaces and cultural destinations,” said Saeed Salem AlSuwaidi, CEO of ADT in a Khaleej Times report. “Our aim is a single, interconnected journey where passengers do not think of modes or transfers, only of reaching their destination with zero friction.”
The tram system will be supported by advanced digital integration, including unified ticketing, AI-powered demand management, and predictive algorithms for a more seamless passenger experience. It also aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Net Zero 2050 goals by reducing car emissions and encouraging the use of public transport.
Complementing the tram is the Urbanloop project, expected to start operations by year-end. These autonomous, pod-like vehicles will provide first- and last-mile connectivity across Abu Dhabi’s busy streets, with climate-controlled cabins carrying two to 10 passengers each.
The Line 4 Tram marks the beginning of a larger expansion plan for Abu Dhabi’s light rail and smart transport network, positioning the city as a leader in sustainable and connected mobility.
