UAE authorities have issued a new advisory warning about online scams, this time spotlighting hackers masquerading as domestic helper service providers. The nation’s Cybersecurity Council emphasized that scams can manifest in various ways, from malicious links that compromise security to deceptive offers on counterfeit websites and sham social media profiles.
Residents are cautioned against engaging with dubious numbers offering domestic helper services or other promotions. Instead, they should block such numbers and report them by calling the ‘Aman’ service at 2626 800.
In light of increasing online fraud, the UAE Digital Government has released a series of guidelines to bolster residents’ safety online. These directives include:
- Not disclosing contact information on unauthorized platforms.
- Avoiding links in unsolicited text messages.
- Refraining from downloading applications from unverified sources.
The advisory also pointed out four tell-tale signs of a compromised device:
- Fast battery drain.
- Slowed device performance.
- Devices performing actions without user’s direction, like unauthorized text messages or app downloads.
- Inexplicable device overheating without running heavy apps.
- To bolster security, residents are urged to routinely back up data, update their smartphone’s OS, and heed manufacturer security notifications.
Victims of electronic fraud are advised not to yield to cybercriminals’ demands. Instead, they should report any fraudulent activities through the official channels to ensure timely and decisive actions against perpetrators.
