UAE police bust international drug smuggling ring valued at AED14 million

The Sharjah Police’s anti-drug forces disrupted an international drug smuggling network in an operation named ‘Unveiling the Curtain’. The operation resulted in the arrest of 32 individuals of Asian and Arab descent and the confiscation of drugs worth a massive Dh14 million.

The gang, involved in smuggling substantial quantities of narcotics and over a million psychotropic substances into the UAE, had ties across multiple countries. The arrest was a joint effort with security services from neighbouring nations.

Colonel Majid Al Assam, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department at Sharjah Police, revealed that they had received a tip about the criminal network planning to distribute these narcotics within the UAE. Despite the gang’s advanced methods to evade detection, Sharjah Police were successful in their sting operation.

After careful surveillance and investigation, one group was detained with 50kg of cannabis and 49 litres of liquid crystal narcotics. Interrogation revealed a vast network across countries, all receiving directions from an overseas contact. The primary storage hub for these illegal substances was discovered in a secret warehouse located in a neighbouring emirate.

Two innovative methods used by the gang for smuggling included exploiting a customs clearance company and hiding liquid crystal narcotics within vehicles. These findings have led to procedural changes in customs operations in collaboration with the national customs authorities.

Highlighting the collective commitment to curbing drug-related crimes, Colonel Assam affirmed that the Sharjah Police will remain at the forefront, deploying modern methods to fight organised crime.

Community members, especially the youth, are encouraged by the Sharjah Police to report any suspicious activities to help in this fight. Reports can be made by calling 8004654 or emailing dea@shjpolice.gov.ae.
