Dubai motorists using phones cause 6 deaths and 58 injuries in 2023

The Dubai Police reported on Friday that distracted driving due to mobile phone usage has caused 99 accidents in the first eight months of 2023. These incidents resulted in 6 fatalities and 58 injuries.

An alarming 35,000 drivers were caught using their phones while driving during this period. Such behavior often results in sudden lane changes, running red lights, and driving below the minimum speed limit, indicating a clear lack of attention to the road.

Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police, issued a stark warning, stating, “Using a phone while driving can lead to catastrophic results. A brief moment checking social media or texting can be deadly.”

To deter this hazardous practice, Dubai Police will impose a Dh800 fine and four black points on those found using phones while driving. This penalty stands whether the driver is making a call, texting, or browsing social media.

To enforce this, the Dubai Police are employing smart technologies, including road cameras that can easily detect such violations. These cameras can also identify other infractions, such as not wearing seat belts and sudden lane deviations.

In conclusion, Al Mazroui appealed to all motorists to strictly follow traffic rules and prioritize safety. “Drivers must act with utmost responsibility, ensuring their safety and the safety of others,” he emphasized.
