Man fined in Saudi for wearing sleepwear outside—yes, even that comfy thobe counts

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have reminded residents and visitors to respect public decency laws after releasing footage of recent violations, including one incident involving a man walking around in sleepwear.

In a video posted by the Ministry of Interior, officers are seen confronting a man for wearing a night thobe—typically worn only at home—while in a public space. Though the attire may seem modest, it violates Article 4 of the Kingdom’s Public Decency Regulations, which bans indecent clothing in public places.

The law also forbids clothing with offensive imagery or text. Fines for such violations can reach up to 5,000 riyals (Dh4,800), with repeat offenders facing doubled penalties.

In areas such as Khobar, even wearing a night thobe in public could result in an on-the-spot fine of 100 riyals.
