House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez marked the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence with a renewed call for unity, integrity, and the pursuit of meaningful reforms, highlighting the House of Representatives’ efforts to safeguard democracy and empower citizens.
In his Independence Day message on June 12, Romualdez emphasized the importance of honoring the country’s history not just through remembrance, but through action. “As we commemorate the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence, we honor the extraordinary courage of the men and women who stood against colonial rule and fought for our right to live in freedom and dignity,” he said. “Let this day inspire us to stand united, to act with purpose, and to serve with integrity.”
Romualdez said the House continues to pass laws that defend democratic rights and promote inclusive development, aligning with the administration’s Bagong Pilipinas vision. He noted that independence should not only allow Filipinos to dream, but also equip them with the means to realize those dreams.
At the close of the 19th Congress’ session, he outlined the legislature’s recent achievements, including the passage of laws strengthening accountability and transparency. Among them are key measures on maritime sovereignty, such as the Philippine Maritime Zones Act and the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act.
The Maritime Zones Act, now Republic Act No. 12064, clearly defines the Philippines’ maritime zones in accordance with international law—setting out boundaries for internal waters, archipelagic waters, the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the continental shelf.
Romualdez encouraged Filipinos to ensure that the sacrifices of national heroes endure beyond symbolic celebrations. “Independence Day is not only a remembrance of our past. It is a call to strengthen our present and secure our future,” he said.
