Taiwan is projected to open 180,000 caregiving jobs over the next five years, yet fewer Filipinos are applying—prompting recruitment agencies to urge for change.
Despite the growing demand, the number of Filipino caregiver applicants has been on the decline, according to a recent report aired on GMA’s “Unang Hirit.” At present, the Philippines classifies caregivers bound for Taiwan as household service workers, which limits their average monthly salary to a little over ₱20,000.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) also enforces a no-placement-fee policy for caregiver applicants. While this protects workers from excessive fees, some stakeholders say it has not been enough to boost interest.
In response, the Association of Licensed Recruitment Agencies is appealing to the DMW to reclassify caregiver jobs as semi-skilled work. They believe this would allow for better compensation and make the role more attractive to Filipino job seekers looking for opportunities abroad.
