Harry Roque vows to face trafficking charges despite asylum bid in the Netherlands

Despite currently seeking asylum in the Netherlands, former Duterte spokesperson Harry Roque said he is prepared to face the human trafficking charges filed against him in the Philippines.

In an ABS-CBN News report, Roque addressed the qualified and regular human trafficking cases lodged by the Department of Justice (DOJ), insisting that the charges stem from what he calls “grave abuse of discretion” by the government, particularly in linking him to alleged illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

“I will not run from this,” he said. “I will face the courts because every citizen has the right to question abuse of power, especially when non-bailable charges are filed without solid evidence.”

Roque confirmed that he has not yet received a formal resolution from the DOJ regarding the case now pending before the Angeles City Regional Trial Court. Nonetheless, he said he will continue pursuing legal remedies, maintaining that his asylum plea is not an attempt to avoid arrest.

“I am not evading justice,” he added. “I am asserting my rights under international law for refugees and asylum seekers.”

According to Roque, the very fact that the government is pressing forward with these charges will only strengthen his case for asylum, arguing that the prosecution is politically motivated. He likened his situation to that of former lawmaker Arnie Teves, whose asylum bid in Timor-Leste was also linked to pending legal issues.

“In the Netherlands, which prides itself on being a defender of human rights and rule of law, these charges will only highlight the unjust prosecution I’m facing — which is why I believe my asylum will be granted,” Roque said.

The DOJ has yet to comment on Roque’s latest statements.
