A woman died while five others were injured after jumping out of a moving jeepney during a robbery on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, around 9:30 p.m. last night.
The 29-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival, GMA News reported.
According to the jeepney driver, Edgardo Cabiente, he was driving from Lagro to Cubao when a man boarded near Don Fabian and suddenly pulled out a knife, announcing a robbery. The suspect threatened the passengers, demanding their bags. One woman hesitated to hand over her belongings as they contained important identification documents, but she eventually gave them up after being threatened with a knife.
Fearing for their safety, several passengers, including the driver’s partner, jumped off the vehicle. Among them was Evangeline Lugay, who was carrying the driver’s earnings of nearly P1,000.
The suspect attempted to flee but was chased down and beaten by bystanders. Riders in the area helped apprehend him before authorities arrived.
“When we got there, the suspect was already being subdued by concerned citizens. We had to intervene to prevent further harm before placing him in the police mobile,” said Patrolman Steve Fontillas of the QC Task Force Disiplina.
The suspect, a 54-year-old man with a prior theft conviction, admitted to the crime, citing job loss as the reason. He is now in police custody at Camp Karingal and faces charges of robbery with homicide and physical injuries.
