Zayed International Airport (AUH) has been named the World’s Most Beautiful Airport at the prestigious Prix Versailles, The World Architecture and Design Award. The accolade, announced during a ceremony at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris, celebrates the airport’s remarkable architectural design in the Airports category. This recognition comes as the airport marks its first anniversary, coinciding with the UAE’s Eid Al Etihad 53 celebrations.
In just one year of operation, Zayed International Airport has redefined global standards for airport excellence. Its design, inspired by Islamic geometric patterns, seamlessly integrates Abu Dhabi’s natural environment and cultural heritage. The structure is bathed in natural light, skillfully moderated by a sloping façade and high-performance glass, creating an inviting, open atmosphere. The airport also features Sana Al Nour, a 30-meter art installation inspired by traditional barjeel wind towers, which enhances energy efficiency by reducing demand by 10%.
Spanning 742,000 square meters with a distinctive X-shaped design, AUH is equipped to manage up to 45 million passengers annually. It accommodates 11,000 travelers per hour and up to 79 aircraft simultaneously, doubling the previous capacity. The airport is set to pioneer nine biometric touchpoints by 2025, further elevating the passenger experience.
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “Zayed International Airport embodies the UAE’s vision for the future of aviation, blending ambition with innovation and redefining the airport experience. This recognition is a proud milestone for Abu Dhabi Airports and the UAE, coinciding with our first anniversary and Eid Al Etihad celebrations.”
Over the past year, AUH has gained global acclaim, earning recognition as the fastest-growing airport in the Middle East for international seat capacity and achieving exceptional ACI ASQ passenger satisfaction scores. It has served over 21 million passengers as of September 30, reflecting steady growth in traffic.
