Former President Rodrigo Duterte has officially filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) to run for mayor of Davao City. The filing took place at the Commission on Elections office in the city, as reported by GMA Regional TV One Mindanao.
Duterte, who previously served as Davao City mayor for multiple terms before his successful presidential run in 2016, is seeking to reclaim his former position. His political career in Davao began in 1988, with stints as mayor from 1988 to 1998, 2001 to 2010, and again from 2013 to 2016.
His son, incumbent Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, will run for vice mayor, while incumbent Vice Mayor Jay Melchor Quitain has filed his candidacy for a councilor seat.
The Duterte family’s involvement in the upcoming local elections extends to other members, with Omar Duterte, son of Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte, filing his candidacy to represent the second district in congress. Paolo Duterte, the former president’s eldest son, also filed his COC for re-election earlier in the day.
Additionally, Rigo Duterte, another grandson of the former president, is vying for a councilor position in the first district of Davao City under the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod – Hugpong ng Pagbabago party.
