UAE residents fined AED3,000 for ‘abandoned cars’ after returning from holidays

A recent surge in inspections targeting “abandoned cars” has left several UAE residents returning from extended holidays to face unexpected fines. The Abu Dhabi Municipality slapped defaulters with a Dh3,000 fine, Khaleej Times reported.

Mahmood Ahmed, one of the residents, shared with the Khaleej Times, “I was stunned on receiving an SMS from Abu Dhabi Municipality about a violation fine. Later, I discovered it was due to my car being deemed unclean and ‘abandoned’.”

Authorities in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Region heightened their scrutiny last week, intensifying their efforts to rid public spaces of neglected cars. Officers have been marking dusty vehicles with stickers, indicating their prolonged stationary status. They emphasized that these regulations aim to avoid health hazards.

All residents are advised to consistently upkeep their vehicles and avoid prolonged outdoor parking. The ongoing campaign primarily focuses on preserving public health, maintaining clean environments, and promoting sustainable waste handling.

While Abu Dhabi’s fine stands at Dh3,000, both Dubai and Sharjah impose a milder fine of Dh500 for similar offences. Dubai Municipality has stated that this rule is in place to ensure both aesthetic and safety standards, warning that accumulated dust on cars might become airborne, endangering public health.

Abandoned vehicles are flagged by inspectors with a notice affixed to the windshield. Owners receive a 15-day grace period to rectify the issue, failing which the vehicle risks confiscation. If the owner fails to settle the fine, Dubai Municipality will auction off the vehicle.

In a similar context, Sharjah Municipality reported the seizure of 3,911 “abandoned cars” in the first half of 2021. Many of these vehicles lacked license plates and were parked illegally. These eyesores, apart from being unsightly, also posed hygiene concerns.

For residents planning prolonged absences, the authorities recommend ensuring regular cleaning of their vehicles, either through arrangements with acquaintances or by using covered parking. Besides upholding cleanliness norms, this is also advised for the vehicle’s security and maintenance, preventing potential rusting and ensuring the car’s longevity.
